Flat Panel TVs Buying Guide

Select your preference below:

A flat panel TV is a thin TV screen that uses display technologies such as plasma or LCD (liquid crystal display). A great thing about flat panel TVs is that they take up very little room and can be mounted on walls.

  • High resolution, crisp, clear images
  • Space saving designs that can be wall mounted, if required
  • Stylish, sleek looks
  • Low reflection and glare from sunlight
  • Flicker free picture
  • Utilise the latest technologies
  • Usually HD-Ready

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. In these TVs, the liquid crystals are activated by electric fields which create the display image.

Plasma TVs use a gas (or plasma) to create images. When you turn on the power, the energy levels in the plasma increase causing it to produce light. This light creates the TV picture.

Both LCDs and Plasmas are slimline, and both offer superb picture quality. Which one you chose is up to your own preference, and which TV is right for you. Plasmas come in larger screen sizes (37”+) and offer a wider viewing angle, but can suffer from screen burn if a logo or image is left on the screen for a long time. LCD TVs are renowned for their sharp picture and vibrant colour and can look better in bright conditions. Plasma TVs are known for a wide range of colours and accurate colour reproduction, giving you very black blacks for a crisp image.

Screen size

Getting the right screen size is important. If the screen is too large, it will magnify any imperfection that exists in the transmission or picture. If the screen is too small, you will not see the detail that you expect.

Picture Quality

The quality of signal received is key to the picture your LCD or Plasma will produce. Digital Tuners offer more channels and give you better and more consistent picture quality. The future of home entertainment however, comes in the form of High Definition Broadcasting. In order to enjoy all the benefits of High Definition TV (HDTV) you will need to buy a HD Ready TV.

TV Combi’s

Some LCD TVs come with an integrated DVD drive, so you can watch TVs and DVDs from one machine.

Wireless

Fed up of having spaghetti junction hidden away behind your TV? Invest in a wireless Flat Panel TV and wave goodbye to messy wiring.

High definition television is the latest viewing technology and provides the best picture quality available. In high definition, films will come alive and engage you like never before.
To get high definition, you need to buy a HD Ready TV, which means the set is able to receive HD signals.

To get the best possible picture and sound, you need to make sure your TV is connected correctly. Changes in technology have resulted in new, higher quality methods of connecting vision and audio equipment.

For the best high definition picture, you will need a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). This provides a digital interface between composite digital audio and video sources such as a Freeview setup box, a DVD player, PC or games console system.
